The Tate to my Violet
The Moriarty to my Sherlock

I think I know what we missed in Sherlock.
We have to assume that everything Sherlock did on the rooftop was for the purpose of fooling everyone into believing he had gone through with killing himself. When he asks Moriarty about who the guns are trained on, it is only to make sure that Moriarty has no idea about Molly.
The thing that was out of character for Sherlock was his crying.
Upon a second watch, I realized that there was an echo when he spoke to John on the phone.
I found it even stranger that he asks John to tell everyone that Moriarty was his invention and that he was a fake. We all know John would never betray Sherlock so how then does the newspaper print his exact words the very next day?

My Theory?:
Sherlock/John’s phones were tapped by The Sun (or Moriarty or both). By calling John and “confessing” he ensured that the story printed the next day would reflect exactly what he wanted it to say. He would have also called off the deaths on Lestrade, Mrs. Hudson and John (he makes a point of mentioning each one of them) presumably because whoever is tapping his phone also has a way of calling off the killers since Moriarty “isn’t going to do it” (a lot of emphasis was placed on the power of having allies as opposed to a string of code) thereby saving his friends and himself while making the world believe he’s dead.

It has been a duel between you and me, Mr. Holmes. You hope to place me in the dock. I tell you that I will never stand in the dock. You hope to beat me. I tell you that you will never beat me. If you are clever enough to bring destruction upon me, rest assured that I shall do as much to you.’
